Martin Stokhof is emeritus professor of philosophy at the Institute for Logic, Language and Computation (ILLC) and the Department of Philosophy of the University of Amsterdam, and Jin Yuelin professor of logic at the Department of Philosophy of Tsinghua University, Beinijing.
Education & research expertise:
Stokhof studied philosophy and linguistics at the University of Amsterdam and received his PhD there in 1984.
He has published extensively on various topics in formal semantics and pragmatics (questions, dynamic semantics), in philosophy of language, and on the philosophy of Wittgenstein, including a monograph on Wittgenstein’s early views on logic and ethics.
He is also co-author of the Gamut two-volume textbook in logic and formal semantics (translated in English, Spanish, and Chinese), and wrote a widely used textbook in philosophy of language.
From 1991 to 2011 he was associate editor semantics and philosophy of language of Linguistics and Philosophy. He is a member of the editorial boards of a number of other internationally leading journals in the field.
Honours:
In 2006 Stokhof was elected as member of the Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie voor Wetenschappen, the Dutch Royal Academy of Sciences; in 2007 as member of the Institut International de Philosophie; and in 2016 as member of the Academia Europea.
Administrative expertise:
Stokhof was scientific director of the Institute for Logic, Language and Computation from 1998 to 2004. From 2004 to 2010 he was chairman of the Humanities Council of NWO, the Dutch Science Foundation, and member of the Standing Committee of the Humanities of the European Science Foundation. He was founding chair of the HERA consortium.
For the KNAW he was chair of the research master accreditation committee of the Dutch-Flemish accreditation organisation NVAO from 2010-2015, and he chairs the KNAW-NWO China Committee since 2011.
From 2014 to 2020 he was member of the Scientific Council of the European Research Council (ERC), from 2017 to 2020 he was vice-president of the ERC and domain coordinator for Social Sciences and Humanities.
